Shop Talk: Freelance Workspaces Volume 1

One of the coolest things about being a freelancer is you can work from anywhere: a corner of your bedroom, an underwater sea pod, the middle of the woods, wherever. Putting together your ultimate workspace is a lot of fun, and I’ve always been fascinated with seeing how other writer folks, particularly people in the game journalism world, setup shop. As a fascinating experiment to indulge my own curiosity as much as anything else, I recently put out a call to fellow freelancers in the game journalism community to share photos and thoughts about their own personal writing spaces. Here’s the first batch. Enjoy!

“Writing Partner” (David Wolinsky)

David notes: “Honestly, I don’t know how anyone gets work done without two monitors. This way, I have no distractions.” He also adds:  “I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s my desk. There are bills and checks on the right. Business cards from E3 on the left. My PSP and checkbook, my water bottle, and a Wesley Willis poster of my neighborhood above my desk.”

Scope out his work blog here.

“The Rabbit Shed” (Julian Murdoch)

“I built the shed for two reasons,” writes Julian. “First, it’s a bunkhouse that can sleep 3 when i have a lot of friends over.  Second, it’s a simple pine box with good lighting, a desk, and NOTHING ELSE.  I ran power to it, but there’s no internet.  All that’s there is me, light, and a flowerbox.  I have plenty of other nerdspaces in my life — a little office in town, a big gaming PC at a desk, a seperate sound recording space.  But when it comes time to get some words down, nothing beats this distraction free space, a cup of coffee, and the laptop.”

Read some of Julian’s musings here.

“Knick-knack Attack” (Scott Nichols)

“So, this is where I do most of my work,” Scott writes. “Most of it is pretty self-explanatory, what with the monitor and various gaming nick-knacks surrounding it. I’ve got a trusty post-it note stack and a CD case I use as a coaster for tea just under my monitor, and I cleared off my assignment whiteboard for this picture, it’s not normally that clean. And yes, I do actually keep my Writer’s Market book and Strunk and White (hidden somewhere in that pile on the right) on my desk at all times.”

“Under the desk is my PC, 360, and PS3, the latter two are hooked up to the TV poking out on the left of the picture, which is where I do all of my reviews. Controllers for the systems are scattered on the floor next to me. Sometimes I’ll take my laptop off to the public library for a change of scenery, but most of the magic happens right here.”

When he’s not cranking out copy for big outlets, Scott writes other good stuff at his work blog here.

“Maximum Cocke” (Taylor Cocke)

Taylor writes: “I like to keep things pretty simple at my work space. A simple desk and laptop is all I really need, but I’ve got my Vita charging because I’m working on a review. I desperately need a new desk chair, as this crappy little Ikea chair has been hurting my back for months. But hey, we can’t always get what we want. I’ve had my D&D dice sitting on my desk since forever ago, and I don’t foresee them going anywhere. Not sure why, I just like them around. Rounding everything out is my Telecaster, which mostly gets used while I stare at a blank Word document and pretend like I’m working.”

“And yes, I am running Windows on my MacBook Pro right now. How the heck else am I going to play DayZ? Don’t be so judgmental, you guys.”

See what Taylor has been up to on Twitter.

“Sticker Frenzy” (Kevin L. Clark)

Kevin writes: “This is where all the magic happens, my friend. Everything on my workspace has a story behind it that is tied directly into my passion and it serves as a reminder to keep reaching for that high score.”

Check out Kevin’s work at Don’t Lose Your Day Job.

“Organization Fascination” (Alex Rubens)

Alex writes: “I’m a very organized person so I generally require a pretty clean space for writing. I use a Henge Dock to easily dock my Macbook Pro without a mess of cables everywhere. My gaming PC is to the left of my desk and uses the same monitor as my Macbook, just a simple switch of the inputs. I have some of my numbers taped to the wall right now, I found myself pulling them up so often that it was worth it just to print them off. For my desktop, I like something extremely clean. It leaves me with less to worry about and no distractions when writing. I use a program called Clean to move everything from my Desktop into organized folders sorted by month every 60 minutes. It works quite well.”

Check out his work here.

“Basement Domain” (Matt Hughes)

Matt writes: “A temp setup in my friend’s cold, dark basement. The cell reception may be weak, but the internet flow is strong!”

Scope out his work blog here.

“Fresh Digs” (Dennis Scimeca)

Dennis writes: “This is a new space, actually. I bought an ASUS 24″ monitor after Diablo 3 sunk its hooks into me. My old desk wasn’t wide enough to fit the monitor and the speakers so I took over my wife’s old hobby table. The ergonomics are horrible, though. I think I need a new chair.”

See what he’s up to here.

  1. This is neat to see 🙂 I always imagine my perfect workspace (that someday I will have when I have more space). It would definitely be ultra-feminine and involve a lot of bookshelves!

    Cheers!

  2. So much fun to see all the diverse spaces we freelancers use to channel our creativity! I’m also a freelance writer, and my space is open and airy — and my favorite piece in the room is the Diet Coke mini-fridge, sent to me compliments of my favorite drink-maker…because they read my blog and saw some positive mentions!

So yes, I frequently enjoy a “cold one” while writing…

    😉

  3. This very interesting, I need my own ‘rabbit hole’. The killing floor and internet are just too distracting. My dream is to save up and buy a desk top so that I can wipe everything off of my laptop, then install linux and open office to turn it into a digital type writer.

  4. No one will ever see my workspace if it has to be as tidy as those shown here. I designed IC’s for a living, and have become quite accustomed to having IC’s, electronic equipment, schematics, trade journals and much, much more, scattered across and around my space. None of that stopped me from having my parts in everything from satellites to toys, and building a semiconductor company with facilities in the U.S., Asia and Europe. But, the workspace photos will not see the light of day.

That could kill any vestiges of respect anyone continues to hold for me.

    Congrats on being freshly pressed.

  5. Brilliant post! Interesting to see the number of people who need clear space with no distractions – I do myself. So, I believe, does Jonathan Franzen. I will send you my writing workspace pic.

  6. Always interesting to see how other people work! All those tidy work spaces make me feel like a slob though…My desk is covered in paper and ramen packets. Maybe I’ll tidy it up, get some new gaming memorabilia and post a pic 😉

  7. I’m a budding game journalist, and I would send you a pic of my workspace, but now that I’ve seen these neat and pretty spaces, I feel inadequate 🙂 I love Julian Murdoch’s no-frills approach to writing. Honestly, it is very distracting to use the same computer for gaming as you do for your own work. That pesky World of Warcraft icon at the bottom of my screen keeps calling my name all day. 🙂

  8. Go, rabbit shed! Enjoyed this entire post. It gave me lots of inspiration; time to ditch the “Laptop on a TV Tray” workspace and get more comfy! Thanks for a very interesting post. It’s neat to check out what other people are up to.

  9. Great post. I share your interest in workspaces. I love checking out how people have the space where they spend most of their weekday, be it desk, drafting board, or photo studio. My day job is fixing airplanes so I really have an obsession with seeing how other people’s shops are set up. That shed is an awesome idea. I need a space like that for reading.

  11. My ideal writing space is similar to Julian’s small bunk in the woods. When there are zero distractions, work gets done. Cool post, thanks for sharing your curiosity.

  12. I’m feeling particularly shabby seeing how everyone else looks very tidy and organised! I’ve always liked the idea of having a space like Roald Dahl, in an adapted and ancient comfy chair, in a shed, with an everlasting supply of lollies to hand 🙂

  13. Congratulations on Freshly Pressed. How exciting for you.
It was very interesting to see all the other work places. I have a small room with lots of bookshelves and a desk for my computer and printer, and of course my little dog who sits at my feet. It’s my haven where I can look out over the water and also see my back yard. It is so peaceful. Happy Blogging cheers Judy 🙂

  14. Scott Nichols says he is using whiteboard to keep an eye on assignments. I use the Gmail labels for the purpose – have created a real red one called “Pending.” Click the label from the list on the left column & I get all pending assignments in a jiffy .
It was nice reading how writers organize their workspace.

  15. Wish I could take a picture of my workspace. Right now it’s in my imagination. Thank you for prompting me to actually get one set up. If I could, it would be overlooking a lake in an old cabin in the woods, far from distraction but close enough to company. Got to have people within a drive/walk to rejuice the imagination/inspiration. Coffee. Good stuff. PEN AND PAPER. This whole notion of Internet is vastly interesting. I feel like I need to have access to it, but do I? I’m going to experiment with that. Great smell of trees and leaves and fresh air. I think all the senses must be stimulated. Phone? Not one I know the number to, that’s for sure. A pet is always a good sounding board and comfort. I think that’s it. Peace. Thanks for the question.

  16. ..i have an “office” in the back garden…just a wooden shed basically..no heating, no lighting…no power….just one large window for light, and an old school classroom desk that i got free from a local school! only its become full of all sorts of detritus..old magazines, cuttings, files, boxes of my old cameras, interesting twigs picked up while walking my dog, etc etc…you get the picture!
    very interesting subject anyways!

  17. I think you’re being conned. All these workspaces can’t possibly be this neat! I’m a writer, too, and my workspace needs to be dug out from under a pile of papers each morning. Then untangled from all the wires and cables. Then cleaned of yesterday’s coffee cups and cherry pits. Only after that do I dump the cat from the chair and get to work.

  18. It is a very interesting post.
I am a translator but I also train and teach people by webconference and videoconference.
If you click the following link you’ll see a snapshot of one of my videoconference sessions with a view of my desk and the two computers I use.
    http://deltaconsultantsinternationallimited.wordpress.com/2012/06/12/my-experience-of-videoconference-training/
I like switching from different work environments. I need to see people around me.
I remember once having finished a translation sitting outside a cafe in Rabat (Morocco) while drinking a mint tea, using my laptop and enjoying all the life around me while I was working.
Most of the time when I change my work environment I feel more stimulated and my work output increases, which might seem paradoxical due to the risk of being distracted when having people around.
I think that changing one’s work environment is the opportunity to avoid the routine and to stimulate creativity. Even if you work at home in the same room, changing the layout or the decoration around may help you reinforce your motivation.

  19. Wow, you are all really neat writers. I wouldn’t know what to do without all of my clutter with in arms reach. LOL I have notes and articles every where that’s how I work the best no OCD here!!!!

  20. These are great ideas for a freelancer’s workspace. Being comfortable in your own work area is so important if you’re a freelancer. Otherwise, you’ll get distracted and you’ll feel less productive.

  21. Nice. I really enjoy seeing how other writer’s work from home. Some seem to have items to inspire while others are more about the organization. It is a very cool idea and I really enjoyed the photos. I’m a freelance writer and I love it. Writing from home or anywhere is just the best job ever.

  22. I’ve got stickers all over my laptop but it’s really only to hide the scratches and the appalling fact that I’m really, really rough with it.

Thank you for sharing this glimpse at writer’s personal spaces with us and congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!

  23. This is interesting. My work table in the office is not cluttered too but there are knick knacks all over. I like the desk with stickers was planning to copy that lol.

  25. Great idea for a post.

Personally, i write where I can. This usually includes a wifi shop, my bedroom, the living room or anywhere I can manage.

Having a nice area for writing would be fantastic–as pointed out by this list.

  26. Loved being a voyeur into people’s work spaces. The minimalism of the rabbit shed appeals precisely because for me it’s a fantasy. I would work best in almost minimalism, but as life piles up around me it spurs me on… Great post! – Renee

  27. Great post – I adore the rabbit shed! I like the idea of having a bright and airy place to write with no Internet to distract me.

  28. Great post. Love seeing other peoples office and workspace and am always jealous of others peoples setups and how organised they are

  29. Reblogged this on Waves and Tidings and commented:
This is an interesting post showcasing the work spaces of several freelance writers. But, but I wonder how many cleaned up their desks before the pictures were taken, hiding how messy their desks truly are. I won’t share a picture of my desk for exactly that reason. There is always lots going on at my desk. Anyways, I thought this was worth a share. I like the rabbit shed!

  30. Wow, what an interesting post. I’m a programmer, not a writer, but our setups seem similar. I wish I could work in a minimalist environment like the shed, but sometimes it’s nice to have a few things to look at when you run dry. I put a picture of my last workspace on twitter before the move . The consoles don’t see much action.

  31. Thanks for sharing the many different kinds of work spaces. As a writer myself I am encouraged. I find that my own desk is way too crowded with ‘stuff’ so your blog inspired me to make some changes :). I also like your idea of creating a space unique to what one writes about… a good way to focus.

  35. Love the work spaces, always so interesting to look through the keyhole! I have pine desk facing the wall, to avoid distraction!! and another wall lined with bookcases filled with books a wee stretch away. I work in a fairly tidy and organised way too…until I don’t!

  36. Thanks for all your great comments everyone! I’m so glad this piece turned out well and that people are enjoying it! I’ll be running additional volumes with new pics from other freelance game journo writer folks very soon!

  37. The rabbit shed was awesome, wish I could do something like that. One of these days, I will get a desk/workspace that encourages me to work. I have the desk but designed/built it myself with the result that it is pub-table height… comfy chairs for that are hard to find…

  38. I like this show and tell section. I don’t have a work station. I usually seat on the sofa or use the dining room table to write my books or edit my photographs so that I can publish my work. 🙂

  39. Wow, I’m a gamer/hobby writer/blogger and all I can think is…my desk looks like a mess compared to these people! I have folders, soda cans, my WoW authenticator, boxes of the individual Crystal Light water-flavour things, lots of medication, salt and pepper shakers, a tiny fan, a sketchbook, my desktop and a laptop all at one desk! Not to mention my TV remote (gotta have it)! I have to admit that I looove a nice clean workspace, though. If I really want to get something done, though, inspiration is always key. I can have the cleanest, shiniest workspace in the world, but if Inspiration isn’t there, well…nothing will get done.

  40. Reblogged this on Blissful Living Notes and commented:
I am on my way to getting the workspace of my dream. This is a great inspiration for me, to see how others arrange their home office, their desk, their special place to get some work done.

I am currently looking for ‘The Chair’. It’s not too bulky, but a great comfort to my butt and back. I suffer from body pains and have to go for deep massages.

  41. This is fabulous. Eventually I want to write in my attic, but right now there’s no air or power supply. For now I write in coffeeshops and at my dining room table. This gives me great inspiration for my future writing space.

  42. My desk at work used to be buried under papers, aircraft parts samples (I am an aerospace engineer), post it notes and my coffee mugs and snacks. I would usually feel shamed into cleaning it every couple of weeks, when I would see the desks of my Swiss colleagues.
Now that my husband and I are freelancing, we have set up a long desk in our bedroom that both of us can use. Since he is a neat-freak, I am forced to keep my section clean, and so the whole desk stays clean. I must admit it is much more work-friendly that way. I just need to get a chest of drawers for below the desk, so I can store some of the books and papers I use frequently for my work.
I must admit my biggest distraction is the internet, whether I am blogging or working on my engineering consulting work. The main problem is that I feel I need it for both of those. When I am writing my book, however, I like to be away from it all in a cafe, or near a window with a nice view.

  43. I love these work stations. Specially the Rabbit Shed. I will die to have a little shed in the woods like that for my work. I am a freelance travel consultant, wedding planner and a quality assurance consultant. Hate to work for people, dress up as a snob and go to work, hate the culture around huge work places. I love my freedom as a freelancer.

  44. How interesting to see how others work, especially when one of the spaces is pretty much just a desk… This could very well be an inspiration to all us writers, all the things to try out. I’d go with the minimalist approach 😉

  45. Greetings from Carolina! I’m bored to tears at work so I decided to browse your blog on my iphone during lunch break. I really like the knowledge you present here and can’t wait to

  53. Even though the most desired work spaces are nicely decorated desks completed with pictures of dogs and family members (including my own), in an enclosed space that is quiet and serene where you can work efficiently and diligently on your studies. As much as I would like to own up to me using this space even though I have it adorably decorated and set up for this “hardworking” purpose, I in no way shape or form use it, actually embarrassing most of the time it serves as an extra area for my clothes to hang. Both in college and back in high school I prefer to study in an open area where I can smell the dinner cooking in the kitchen by my mother next to me, or now in my current situation in college where I study in the common room where you can hear the twenty different conversations going on with music always blaring in the background. Usually these choices of scenery prove distracting but I find that these are the surroundings that I find most suitable (and it doesn’t help that my room has no AC).
The dreamy space of the Kenamond common room is complete with seven couches that are probably from the 80’s, three vending machines that takes more students money than it does food, and a TV which is always playing terrible re-runs. So far this space proves very distracting but I like to be social and interact with my friends and get/give input on homework and about classes. Hopefully when the workload increases my study tactics will increase and improve, as well as the space where I study and do my work.
The picture I am showing right here is my current college “setup” which would be my dream and desired setup for studying. Once the weather cools down and fall sets in I will be in more of a set routine for homework and my schedule, this will mean that I will need to actually concentrate and focus on my studies. Because I have always fallen to the typical bad studying habits back in high school, hopefully the change of scenery and lack of distractions will force my brain to focus; making the outcome higher grades and more work done in a fast and efficient amount of time. I will be able to test this method once the weather drops below the average of ninety and humid (which makes my dorm smell horrid and feels like you’re at the beach without getting a tan, so I try and not be in there as much as possible). So until that much awaited time of year, I will be doing my studies in the ever so interesting Kennahood common room.
