As someone who’s neck-deep in the process of prepping to launch a new podcast, I’ve spent a hell of a lot of time fiddling with assorted software — both free and paid — to find just the right one that hits that tricky trifect of perfect balance between reliability, functionality, and quality. SuperTintin might not look like much at first glance, but this easy-to-use audio/video recording software does some magic stuff that will save you a lot of hassle if you’re looking to record top quality audio for your podcast.
Prepare for another dose of Demo-licious! This time I dig into Mount Your Friends, a hilarious XBLIG about dudes climbing all over other dudes…and goats. I couldn’t stop laughing. Welcome to Demo-licious, a new video column where I dive into free demos of cool, unusual, and wacky games and see what kind of trouble I can cause. In this first installment, I make a huge mess in Viscera Cleanup Detail — a silly indie game currently in Alpha that tasks you with cleaning up all the gore left over on an abandoned space station after all hell breaks loose.

Perhaps a little context is in order! I’ve been wanting to expand into making video content for some time now, and this new goofy Weird Things I Did In…[insert game name here] is the first manifestation of that. Often when I’m playing games for review or for fun, it’s the unexpected, unanticipated oddities I encounter that make it truly awesome. The idea for this series originally came from an older piece I wrote a while back called “Weird Things I Did In Skyrim (That Were F*%$ing Awesome).”
This is sort of the same idea, but a tad different. I’ll be tackling other new and upcoming games that I encounter opportunities to create shenanigans in. Stay tuned! And in the meantime, please do share the video and subscribe to my YouTube channel!
Yesterday, I joined former game journo editor and Critical Path author Dan Amrich for a video interview on Google Hangout with the rad folks at GameZone. We had a fun time chatting about how we got our start as freelancers in the game industry and tackled a range of questions related to writing, freelancing, and game journalism. It was a great time and a fun way to promote our books. If you’re interested in writing about games at all, check out my new book Up Up Down Down Left WRITE: The Freelance Guide to Video Game Journalism which is heavily focused on the freelance end of things. Dan also has a great book that’s been out for a while now called Critical Path: How to Review Videogames for a Living, which is more of a general tome focused on the art of reviewing games and working on staff at game publications.
