Feature: Kickin’ It Nerdcore

mc frontalot

“Even before MC Frontalot coined the term “nerdcore” almost a decade ago to describe his own distinct flavor of hip hop, geeky rappers have busted out rhymes about videogames, AD&D, hacking, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, computer culture and an array of other unabashedly nerdy subjects. As this singular hip hop scene continues to develop and gain momentum, it’s not surprising to find an increasing number of references to videogames and gamer culture woven throughout the lyrics and beats of many rappers who rally under the nerdcore banner.”

A fun feature exploring the connections between nerdcore hip hop and videogames. This piece will eventually be expanded into a chapter in the book I’m working on about the music of geek and gamer culture. Check out the full article at The Escapist here.

  1. Being British, I love Wallflower and the lyrics “I’ve got a new dance called The Margaret Thatcher.
It’ll get in your pants, you’d better call the dispatcher.
    and don’t do anything I wouldn’t condone
except a dance named after a villainous crone.”
Songs featuring Margaret Thatcher continue to be produced, such as The Magggie Thatcher Experience with Thatcher’s Death Anthem and ‘The Lady’s not for Burning’ who are trying to Flash Mob Thatcher’s Death by using social networking sites such as Facebook. ( http://www.flashmondeath.tk ) They are a one piece spoof band from Sheffield, Yorkshire who make use of Flash Games related to the iron lady or the Miners Strike to gain popularity. ( http://www.maggiethatcher.com/buymusic.html ) They are not the only ones, however. Chumbawamba also have an E.P out called ‘in Memorium’ which will be sent out to everyone who orders one the day Thatcher dies. The genre ‘Geek or Nerd Hip Hop’ have also produced songs featuring Thatcher such as MC Frontalot with the lyrics “I’ve got a new dance called The Margaret Thatcher.
It’ll get in your pants, you’d better call the dispatcher.
    and don’t do anything I wouldn’t condone
except a dance named after a villainous crone.”
