Hands-On With Faster Than Light (FTL) @GameSpy

February 10, 2012

“The darkest reaches of deep space are colder and more merciless than any dungeon, and in Faster Than Light (FTL) — a rare sci-fi roguelike set in a star-filled realm of intergalactic turmoil instead of a dank subterranean dungeon — death awaits anyone foolhardy enough to rocket into the void. With a well-armed fleet of rebel star cruisers always nipping at my heels, playing FTL feels a lot like walking the plank. I’m doomed no matter how I look at it. But fighting to stave off the inevitable destruction of my ship and crew as we make a mad dash through the cosmos gets my blood pumping every time.”

February 9, 2012

“These days, so many new releases on the Xbox Live Indie Games Channel seem to fall into the categories of creepy dating simulators, zombie-apocalypse shooters, or blatant clones of other successful game formulas that it’s easy to miss out on the truly innovative indies. Thankfully, if you poke around beneath the surface, you’ll unearth some crazy, interesting stuff.

Hands-On Indie Preview: Toren

January 19, 2012

“It’s rare when a game’s sheer beauty and elegance has the power to hook me from the very moment I start playing. Toren’s story-driven puzzle adventure follows the tale of a young girl trapped inside a crumbled tower guarded by the doom-inducing gaze of a horrific monster who watches from afar. But it’s far more than that. Every facet of her meticulous ascent through the ominous spire — from her initially playful outlook to the way time rapidly ages her as she climbs higher — has a poetic grace to it that simply captivates. The early stretch of this indie held me transfixed to my PC screen, yet one niggling question remained: Can immaculate style and storytelling keep bare-bones gameplay afloat? “

Legend of Grimrock Hands-On Preview

January 6, 2012

“Drawing a wealth of knowledge from the good book of 1980s-era dungeon crawling 101, the folks over at Almost Human, Ltd. know their chops when it comes to exploring dank corridors, sticking it to drippy-mawed beasts, and scavenging for scraps of gear needed to survive. The indie studio’s upcoming Legend of Grimrock is absolutely awash in old-school nostalgia, channeling the spirit that made classics like Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master so hard to step away from as a kid. But pushing deep into the monster-filled innards of the game’s ominous subterranean realm during my hands-on time revealed much more to this dungeon crawler RPG than mere retro charm.”

Karate Chop Missiles In Cobalt (Preview)

December 26, 2011

“When it comes to sweet questions like “why dodge an incoming missile if you can punch it back at the metal jerk that fired it at you in the first place,” Cobalt has all the right answers. As the first third-party indie project published by Minecraft creators Mojang, this little battle-intensive platform shooter, with its wide-eyed and heavily-armed robots, is disarmingly cute for the brutal, cutthroat combat contained within.”

Feature: Five Indie Games To Watch For

December 5, 2011

“It’s consistently impressive how many small game developer studios with meager budgets and limited resources are cranking out such awesome games. Some of the most intriguing and innovative titles to launch this year hailed from the indie scene, and there’s a lot of good stuff cooking just below the radar. Looking ahead at 2012 and beyond, quite a few sexy indie games are on the horizon for the PC. Here are five gems you don’t want to miss out on when they launch.”

Review: Minecraft

November 30, 2011

“Minecraft is dangerous. You can sit down to a new randomly generated world for a quick session only to snap out of the creative haze many hours later to realize you’ve forgotten to eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. There’s always just one more tunnel to carve, one more resource to harvest, one more tool to forge, or one more to-scale replica of the Star Trek Enterprise to re-create block by block. The ability to exercise limitless freedom and mold the game’s retro fantasy world to your liking is powerfully addictive, and this indie-developed sandbox phenomenon holds a staggering level of depth. Some of the game’s elements still feel rough and unfinished, but nevertheless, once Minecraft sinks its hooks into you, it won’t let go. “

Preview: Voxatron Will Assimilate You

November 9, 2011

“Part of what makes creating your own virtual world so much fun is having the freedom to run around and blow the crap out of it when you’re done. To that end, Voxatron strikes a nice balance between building and destroying. This upcoming voxel-centric adventure shooter from indie studio Lexaloffle blends top-down run-and-gun action with platform puzzle exploration. It’s Robotron 2020 meets Legend of Zelda – only you can reduce the landscape and its unfriendly denizens to piles of blocky rubble. That’s not even the coolest part: Almost everything I encountered during my time noodling around in the alpha build’s adventure mode was created using the powerful built-in level editor.”

Review: The Binding of Isaac

October 2, 2011

“Edmund McMillen is no stranger to the grotesque. The indie game designer’s earliest work is slathered in a drippy sauce of profane creepiness that makes the gore-drenched sadism of Super Meat Boy seem tame. It’s from this dark, turbulent womb of roiling blackness that McMillen and his cohorts birth their latest project. The Binding of Isaac is a demented dungeon crawler that borrows familiar elements from gaming classics like The Legend of Zelda, Robotron, and Rogue, stitching them together into a freakish patchwork automaton. It’ll no doubt turn your stomach, but that’s a big part of the draw.”
